The Office of the Vice President for Policy and Governance ensures the integrity of the university’s governance framework. The office provides strategic guidance and direct support to the university’s Board of Visitors, administers the university-wide system of shared governance, oversees a coordinated enterprise-wide policy management program that supports Virginia Tech and its missions, and is the official repository for all university policies. The office administers the work of Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors, its leadership and committees, maintains the official records of the Board, and serves as the university community’s main point of contact with the Board. The office also administers the infrastructure for the operation of University Council and its commissions and committees. In addition, the office facilitates collaboration within the university community, providing guidance to senior leadership and university governance bodies based on best practices nationwide, and providing education, training, and consultation on shared governance and policy development and interpretation.
The Board of Visitors of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is a public corporation that serves as the governing body of the university and is under the control of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Board of Visitors sets high-level policies for the university, appoints the President of the university, and delegates certain authorities to the President for the operation of the university. The President reports to the Board of Visitors.
